Speed Indicator Device (SID)
Information about the speed indicator device (SID) and where we can use it within the parish of Compton.
Understanding Speed Indicator Devices Speed indicator devices (SID) are valuable tools used to monitor and manage traffic speeds, ensuring road safety and compliance with speed limits. These devices display real-time speeds of approaching vehicles, offering immediate feedback to drivers by displaying their speed on the screen. If the speed exceeds the limit, the device may also display a warning message.
Importance of Regular Charging To ensure continuous operation, it’s crucial to charge the speed indicator device regularly. Depending on traffic volume, the device needs charging at least every five days, and often more frequently. High traffic can lead to quicker battery depletion, necessitating more frequent charging. Various device settings, such as including warning signals, can also alter battery consumption.
Site Approval and Risk Assessment For safety, sites for installing speed indicator devices must be risk assessed and approved by West Berkshire Council. This ensures that the location is suitable and safe for both the device, the traffic, and the volunteers who deploy the SID. Please view the map of Compton’s approved SID sites, where we are currently able to use the speed indicator device.
Shared Resources and Volunteer Management To manage costs, and to reduce the burden on those volunteering to deploy the equipment and recharge the batteries, Compton Parish Council and East Ilsley Parish Council share the speed indicator device.
Next Steps and Data Analysis The next phase in our efforts involves analysing the data collected by the speed indicator devices. By carefully reviewing this information, we can identify areas that require greater attention and determine the most effective actions to take moving forward. This data-driven approach will enable us to target specific concerns and enhance road safety measures across the community.
