⚠️ Speed Limits & Highways Update

West Berkshire Council has shared its proposed layout for introducing a 20 mph speed limit in parts of Compton. The map shows where WBC is suggesting new 20 mph zones, along with a few areas where 30 mph limits would replace higher existing limits. However, several changes that have previously been discussed locally are not included in WBC’s proposal, including extending the 30mph limit towards East Ilsley past the pumping station.

WBC has recently updated its district‑wide policy on 20 mph schemes. Under the new approach, a scheme will only go ahead where there is clear and significant support from residents. This means the Compton proposal will only progress if strong community backing can be demonstrated.

To demonstrate local support, WBC has suggested that a petition could be used. However, the Parish Council is considering whether a village‑wide survey may be more helpful. A survey would give residents the chance to comment not only on the layout proposed by WBC, but also on any additional changes that may be needed.

Further updates will be shared once WBC confirms how it wishes local support to be demonstrated.

🔌 EV‑Charging Points

West Berkshire Council has informed us it wishes to install EV-chargers on Shepherds Mount, approximately between numbers 38-48, and Burrell Road, approximately between numbers 2-12. In June, the Council raised concerns about the lack of nearby facilities and the fact that every property on Shepherds Mount has off‑street parking.

We are advised:

“The proposed chargers would be installed within existing parking areas and do not involve any immediate changes to parking arrangements. At this stage:

• the bays would not be designated as EV‑only; and
• existing parking permissions and restrictions would continue to apply.”

Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) roll-out in West Berkshire

🏛️ Institute Site & Community Buildings

A site visit took place in June to view the two proposed community buildings on the Institute site – the ‘Pickled Pig’ and the Guardhouse. The Parish Council has now approved a building survey, which will help assess the potential costs of taking on these buildings for community use. Further updates will be shared once the survey work is complete and the likely financial implications are understood.

🌳 Village Maintenance & Facilities

The Council recently agreed to apply for planning permission for a storage container adjacent to the Sports Pavilion. This is essential to provide storage for the equipment needed for the use and marking of the football pitch, which is currently stored in the Sports Pavilion. If permission is granted, the council will apply for funding from The Football Foundation and The Good Exchange, with remaining costs met from CIL funds.

The Parish Council has agreed a programme of tree works across the Recreation Ground and both allotment sites. We are currently awaiting confirmation of the scheduled dates and will update residents once the contractor has provided a timetable.

🪦 Burial Ground

An archaeological survey of the proposed burial ground is scheduled for the week commencing 27^th July.

🏠 Action for Homes West Berkshire

The Council agreed to support the Action for Homes West Berkshire campaign. This campaign is raising the issue of the sale of social housing by SNG Network (formerly Sovereign) in Compton and other nearby villages.
