Update on the Former Pirbright Institute Site
Information from Homes England about the development of the Former Pirbright Institute site, including information on workshops on the wildlife habitat and proposed open space.

A copy of the below information from Homes England, presented in full in the leaflet below, will be delivered to all households in Compton shortly.
Homes England is bringing forward plans for the redevelopment of the former Pirbright Institute for Animal Health in Compton. A hybrid planning permission for up to 160 new homes, employment space and green areas including the former cricket pitch, and a wildlife area on the northern end of the site exists currently.
Works have already taken place to demolish the buildings that were previously located on the site and extensive remediation has been carried out.
The current hybrid planning permission will lapse in March 2026, so we are planning to submit a new outline planning application to preserve a permission on the site for an additional three years.
We are writing to invite your feedback on the proposal prior to the submission of the new outline application.
We propose the same number of dwellings, and are looking at improvements to the proposed wildlife area, and the drainage on site.
Homes England acquired the site in November 2016, and has since been seeking to create an attractive, sustainable neighbourhood which integrates well with the local landscape and the existing village of Compton.
How to get involved
We will be holding a series of events prior to the submission of the planning application, including workshops on the wildlife habitat area and proposed open space. The details of these can found below :
- Workshop 1: Wednesday 30th April, 6.30pm – 8pm
- Workshop 2: Tuesday 6th May, 6.30pm – 8pm
- Public drop-in session: June 2025 – time and date to be confirmed.
The workshop sessions will specifically focus on the wildlife habitat area and proposed open space, and the feedback will help inform the design of the application.
Each of these events will all be held in Compton, and we will confirm the venue with participants. For each workshop, we have space for up to 30 residents, and they will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
If you would like to register for a workshop, or be informed about the timings of the public drop-in, once it is confirmed, please use the contact details below. You can also find out more by visiting ComptonHE.co.uk.
We look forward to welcoming you to an event soon.
