Becoming a Parish Councillor

Parish councils play a vital role in representing the interests of the local community, making decisions that shape the area, and addressing the needs and concerns of residents. If you’re passionate about contributing to your community and making a difference, becoming a parish councillor could be the perfect way to get involved.

There are two main ways to become a parish councillor: election and co-option. Here’s how each process works:

Election

Parish council elections are held every four years. The next election takes place in May 2027. If you would like to stand for election, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Check Eligibility: To stand as a candidate, you must meet certain criteria, such as being at least 18 years old, being a UK or Commonwealth citizen, and either living or working in the parish or within three miles of its boundaries. More detailed information on eligibility can be found on the Electoral Commission website.
  2. Submit a Nomination: You will need to complete and submit a nomination form, which can be obtained from your local Electoral Services team. This form must be signed by a proposer and seconder who are registered electors within the parish.
  3. Campaign: Once your nomination has been accepted, you may campaign to raise awareness of your candidacy. This can include speaking to residents, sharing your goals for the parish, and promoting your vision for the community.
  4. The Election: If the number of candidates exceeds the number of available seats, an election will be held, giving residents the opportunity to vote for their preferred representatives. If there are fewer candidates than seats, you may be elected unopposed.

Co-option

If a vacancy arises on the parish council outside of the regular election cycle and no election is called, the council can fill the vacancy through co-option. This process allows the council to appoint a new councillor directly. Here’s how it works:

  1. Expression of Interest: The council will advertise the vacancy and invite interested individuals to apply. This will involve submitting a short written statement outlining your reasons for wanting to join the council, your skills, and what you hope to contribute. Please complete the Casual Vacancy Application at below and return to us either by email, or by post to Compton Parish Council, Wilkins Centre, Burrell Road, Compton, Nebwury, RG20 6NP.
  2. Selection: Applicants may be invited to attend a council meeting, where they can introduce themselves and answer questions from the councillors. The council will then vote to select the new councillor from the applicants.
  3. Joining the Council: Once appointed, and on signing you acceptance of office, you will officially become a parish councillor and can immediately begin participating in council activities and decision-making.
